Crossword Genius

Travel for miles the wrong way in US city (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

fargo

'us city' is the definition.

'travel for miles the wrong way' is the wordplay.
'travel' becomes 'go' ('go' can be a synonym of 'travel').
'for' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other) (I've seen this in other clues).
'miles' becomes 'raf' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'the wrong way' says the letters should be written backwards.
'raf' backwards is 'far'.
'go' after 'far' is 'FARGO'.

'in' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for fargo that I've seen before include "He and Wells founded US stagecoach company" , "Partner of Wells in US transport company" , "Wells --, stagecoach service" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
