Unpleasant type poking face using fingers (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

digital

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'using fingers' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'unpleasant type poking face' is the wordplay.
'unpleasant type' becomes 'git' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'poking' means one lot of letters goes inside another (poke can mean to create a hole in).
'face' becomes 'dial' (dial is a kind of face).
'git' put inside 'dial' is 'DIGITAL'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for digital that I've seen before include "of modern clock?" , "Using fingers" , "Of data expressed as a series of 0 and 1" , "As most computers" , "Displaying in numbers like some watches" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
