Wordsmiths anagramming using list (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

linguists

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'wordsmiths' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both people as well as being plural nouns.
Maybe they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'anagramming using list' is the wordplay.
'anagramming' indicates anagramming the letters (I've seen 'anagram' mean this).
'using'+'list'='usinglist'
'usinglist' anagrammed gives 'LINGUISTS'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for linguists that I've seen before include "People skilled in languages" , "Polyglots" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
