Crossword Genius

America welcoming performer in flip-flops (1-5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

u-turns

'flip-flops' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'america welcoming performer' is the wordplay.
'america' becomes 'US' (United States).
'welcoming' is an insertion indicator (in sense of 'inviting in').
'performer' becomes 'turn' ('turn' can mean a performer as well as their act).
'us' enclosing 'turn' is 'U-TURNS'.

'in' is the link.

(Other definitions for u-turns that I've seen before include "Complete reversals, cars or decisions" , "Complete reversals of direction in car driving" , "Complete reversals, of cars or attitudes" , "Complete reverses, cars or attitudes" , "Complete reversals, of direction or opinion" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
