Either way it was of some worth in India (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

anna

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'worth in india' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both quantities as well as being singular nouns.
Perhaps they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'either way it was of some' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'way' could be 'n' (Compass direction - North) and 'n' is found in the answer.
'some' could be 'a' and 'a' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'na' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

(Other definitions for anna that I've seen before include "Book by Tolstoy" , "- - and the King of 22" , "copper, once, in India" , "Girl - old Indian coin" , "Dame -- Neagle" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail and The Telegraph.
