I believe the answer is:

awarded

'gave' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both to do with ownership as well as being past participle verbs.
Perhaps they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'prize to a sketch about writer' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'prize' could be 'award' (synonyms) and 'award' is present in the answer.
'writer' could be 'ed' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'ed' is located in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'the' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for awarded that I've seen before include "Gave on the basis of merit" , "Gave a prize to" , "assigned" , "Bestowed on the basis of merit" , "Granted as a prize" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Times.
