I believe the answer is:

royalties

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'writers' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are plural nouns, I cannot see how one could define the other.

'neckwear fit for a king generates cash' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'neckwear' could be 'ties' (I've seen this in another clue) and 'ties' is located in the answer.
'a' is within the answer.
'king' could be 'r' (abbreviation for rex, king in Latin) and 'r' is found in the answer.
'cash' could be 'l' (The pound sterling symbol is an elaborate L) and 'l' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'oy' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'for' is the link.

(Other definitions for royalties that I've seen before include "Writer's payments" , "Appropriate payments" , "Payments to composers" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
