Crossword Genius

One may have to pick one's way here (10)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

crossroads

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'one may have' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot understand how one could define the other.

'pick one's way here' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'one's' could be 'os' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'os' is found in the answer.
'way' could be 'road' (road is a kind of way) and 'road' is found in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'to' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for crossroads that I've seen before include "Meeting of ways" , "Intersection of ways" , "critical situation?" , "Soap once" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish News.
