Crossword Genius

Pass along the way (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

overtake

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'pass' is the definition.
(I know that pass can be written as overtake)

'along the way' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'the' could be 't' (the is pronounced as a 't' sound in some dialects) and 't' is present in the answer.
'way' could be 'e' (Compass direction - East) and 'e' is found in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for overtake that I've seen before include "Travel past" , "Pass a car ahead" , "Catch up with and pass" , "Happen to - pass by" , "Pass (a vehicle)" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
