Crossword Genius

Revolutionary and popular sort of poker (3-3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

red-hot

'sort of poker' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'revolutionary and popular' is the wordplay.
'revolutionary' becomes 'red' (red can informally mean communist).
'and' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'popular' becomes 'hot' (hot can mean popular or trendy).
'red'+'hot'='RED-HOT'

(Other definitions for red-hot that I've seen before include "Glowing; extremely popular" , "likely to win" , "Very recent - very sexy" , "Most recent - glowing" , "Glowing with heat" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
