Time to go and twist a bit? (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

twiddle

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'twist a bit?' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both acts as well as being singular nouns.
Perhaps there's an association between them I don't understand?

'time to go' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'time' could be 't' (abbreviation) and 't' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'widdle' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'and' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for twiddle that I've seen before include "Twirl and fiddle" , "Turn in a purposeless way" , "Play with and twist around" , "Finger idly" , "Twirl (thumbs?)" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
