Volcanic rock turned up by little creatures (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

pumice

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'volcanic rock' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'turned up by little creatures' is the wordplay.
'turned' says the letters should be written backwards.
'by' says to put letters next to each other.
'little creatures' becomes 'mice' (mouse is a kind of creature. I am not sure about the 'little' bit.).
'up' in reverse letter order is 'pu'.
'pu'+'mice'='PUMICE'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for pumice that I've seen before include "Piece of volcanic rock used as an abrasive" , "Light, porous volcanic rock" , "Mineral" , "Volcanic stone used as abrasive" , "Volcanic-rock scourer" .)
