A drink taken to heart by football fans? (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

port

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'a drink' is the definition.
(I know that port is a more specific form of the action drink)

'taken to heart by football fans?' is the wordplay.
'taken to' becomes 'resorted to' ('resort to' can be a synonym of 'take to').
'heart' says to take the centre.
'by' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'football fans?' becomes 'po' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should believe this answer much more).
The middle letters of 'resortedto' are 'rt'.
'rt' after 'po' is 'PORT'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for port that I've seen before include "Saint John, for one, > left" , "Rotterdam, e.g." , "Sweet red wine for after dinner" , "Wine - shippers use it" , "Stanley perhaps" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
