A fair amount of turf and borders for flowers (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

tulips

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'flowers' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'a fair amount of turf and borders' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'amount' could be 'li' (li is a kind of amount) and 'li' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'tups' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'for' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for tulips that I've seen before include "Garden flowers, musically from Amsterdam" , "Flowering bulbs" , "Garden flowers associated with Amsterdam" , "Garden flowers - tip-toe through them in song" , "Slit up the Spring flowers" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Times.
