I believe the answer is:

bout

'a fight' is the definition.
(as in a bout in boxing)

'but about nothing' is the wordplay.
'about' is an insertion indicator.
'nothing' becomes 'O' (looks like zero - 0).
'but' placed around 'o' is 'BOUT'.

(Other definitions for bout that I've seen before include "Attack (of illness)" , "Period of activity or boxing contest" , "Spell of eg drinking" , "Spell - boxing match" , "Fight; instance of illness" .)
