Crossword Genius

A Greek follower (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

beta

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'follower' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how they can define each other.

'a greek' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'a' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'bet' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for beta that I've seen before include "sort of test" , "Second letter of the Greek alphabet" , "2nd letter of Greek alphabet" , "Second highest grade of mark" , "Second-class" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
