Crossword Genius

A noted attempt for oneself (3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

ego

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'oneself' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'a noted attempt' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'attempt' could be 'go' (go is a kind of attempt) and 'go' is found in the answer.
A single letter 'e' remains which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'for' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for ego that I've seen before include "(Self-assertive) personality" , "Personal pride" , "Selfishness" , "One's self image" , "Aspect of the personality" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
