Crossword Genius

A noted fixing device, of wood (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

pine

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'wood' is the definition.
(pine is a type of wood)

'a noted fixing device' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'device' could be 'pin' (pin is a kind of device) and 'pin' is found within the answer.
A single letter 'e' remains which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'of' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for pine that I've seen before include "Conifer grown for wood" , "A tree to grieve for" , "Yen - tree" , "Coniferous tree" , "Long - tree" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
