off the hook

'out of a predicament' is the definition.
Both the answer and definition are adjectives. Perhaps you can see an association between them that I can't see?

'a phone like this can get one' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'one' could be 'the' (both can introduce a definite example of something) and 'the' is present in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for off the hook that I've seen before include "Where those released from obligation have got" , "After landing, get char from here" , "Close to the Dutch shore" , "Out of danger - freed of guilt" , "Safe from further blame or obligation" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
