Crossword Genius

A place to scale with ease but a scariest (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

staircase

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'a place' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot see how one could define the other.

'scale with ease but a scariest' is the wordplay.
'a scariest' anagrams to 'STAIRCASE'.
However, I am not clear how the anagram is indicated.

'to' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for staircase that I've seen before include "Situation of flight" , "A group of linked canal locks" , "Indoor flight" , "Route between floors" , "part of the mansion?" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
