A team never in front? (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

aside

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'never in front?' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't see how one could define the other.

'a team' is the wordplay.
'team' becomes 'side' (both can mean a sports team).
'a'+'side'='ASIDE'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for aside that I've seen before include "private" , "Remark not for hearing" , "remark, incidentally" , "(Pushed) out of the way" , "Quiet words spoken" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
