Achieve success in the long run? (2,3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

go far

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'achieve success' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'long run?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'long' could be 'far' (similar in meaning) and 'far' is present in the answer.
'run?' could be 'go' (both can mean to function or work) and 'go' is present in the answer.
No letters remain.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'in the' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for go far that I've seen before include "flourish?" , "Make real progress, achieve much" , "Succeed" , "Achieve great things" , "Last" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
