Crossword Genius

After new cuts firm goes to the wall (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

stucco

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'the wall' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't see how one could define the other.

'after new cuts firm' is the wordplay.
'after' says to put letters next to each other.
'new' is an anagram indicator.
'firm' becomes 'co' (a firm is a company).
'cuts' anagrammed gives 'stuc'.
'stuc' put next to 'co' is 'STUCCO'.

'goes to' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for stucco that I've seen before include "Mouldable wall plaster" , "Plaster used for decorative moulding" , "Durable finish for walls" , "Plaster for coating outside walls" , "Fine plaster used on wall surfaces" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
