Aimlessly wandering in Dublin, Split and Ring without an introduction (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

drifting

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'aimlessly wandering' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'ring without an introduction' is the wordplay.
'ring' becomes 'ding' (dinging is a kind of ringing).
'without' is an insertion indicator ('without' can be similar in meaning to 'outside').
'an introduction' becomes 'rift' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should believe this answer much more).
'ding' placed around 'rift' is 'DRIFTING'.

'in dublin split and' is the link.
This may not be correct. Some or all of it may be part of another bit of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for drifting that I've seen before include "Aimlessly wandering from place to place" , "Floating with the current" , "Floating about aimlessly" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Times.
