Crossword Genius

Almost board ship, then turn and stop (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

embargo

'stop' is the definition.
(embargoing is a kind of stopping)

'almost board ship then turn' is the wordplay.
'almost' means to remove the last letter (most of the word but not all of it).
'board ship' becomes 'embark' (I've seen this before).
'then' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other).
'turn' becomes 'go' (a person's move in a board game).
'embark' with its final letter taken away is 'embar'.
'embar'+'go'='EMBARGO'

'and' is the link.

(Other definitions for embargo that I've seen before include "Restraint - prohibition" , "Official ban on trade or commerce" , "Legal restraint" , "Commercial break" , "Block" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
