I believe the answer is:
altruism

(I know that altruism is a type of unselfishness)
'almost every cliche' is the wordplay.
'almost' means to remove the last letter (most of the word but not all of it).
'every' becomes 'all' (similar in meaning).
'cliche' becomes 'truism' (I've seen this in another clue).
'all' with its last letter taken off is 'al'.
'al'+'truism'='ALTRUISM'
'is about' is the link.
