Crossword Genius

American people love Frenchman's heart being worn on his sleeve (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

comanche

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'his sleeve' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how they can define each other.

'american people love frenchman's heart being worn' is the wordplay.
'american people love' becomes 'co' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'heart' says to take the centre.
'being worn' indicates an anagram (worn can mean damaged).
The central letters of 'frenchmans' are 'enchma'.
'enchma' with letters rearranged gives 'manche'.
'co'+'manche'='COMANCHE'

'on' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for comanche that I've seen before include "American Indian language" , "Native SW American" , "Native of 7 ac" , "brave" , "Language of US" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
