Crossword Genius

Artist and composer ignoring a writer from Italy (2,5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

el greco

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'artist' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'composer ignoring a writer from italy' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'writer' could be 'eco' (I've seen this before) and 'eco' is found within the answer.
'from' could be 'e' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'e' is located in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'and' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for el greco that I've seen before include "Sixteenth to seventeenth century Greek-born Spanish painter" , "Sp. painter, born Domen- ikos Theotokopoulos" , "Cretan-born Spanish painter, d. 1614" , "Spanish painter, nicknamed for his place of birth" , "Spanish painter born 1541 in Crete" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
