Crossword Genius

Asian to take place giant guards (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

tibetan

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'asian' is the definition.
(Tibet is in Asia)

'take place giant guards' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'take' could be 'be' (being is a kind of taking) and 'be' is present in the answer.
'giant' could be 'titan' (titans are giant mythological creatures) and 'titan' is found in the remaining letters.
This accounts for all the letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'to' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for tibetan that I've seen before include "Oriental" , "Nationality of the Dalai Lama" , "Former nationality of citizen of Lhasa" , "from high land" , "mountain man, say" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
