Crossword Genius

At the end of August, a couple will be far away (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

distant

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'be far away' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'at the end of august a couple' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'the' could be 't' (the is pronounced as a 't' sound in some dialects) and 't' is found within the answer.
'a' could be 'an' and 'an' is located in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'will' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for distant that I've seen before include "Far apart in space or time" , "overseas?" , "Remote in time or place" , "Absent - coming from a far-away place" , "cool" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
