Crossword Genius

Average kind of wine knocked back causes wind (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

meander

'wind' is the definition.
(to meander is to wind around)

'average kind of wine knocked back' is the wordplay.
'average' becomes 'mean' (type of average).
'kind of wine' becomes 'red'.
'knocked back' says the letters should be written backwards.
'red' reversed gives 'der'.
'mean'+'der'='MEANDER'

'causes' is the link.

(Other definitions for meander that I've seen before include "Wander in leisurely way, like stream" , "Wander without aim or direction" , "Wind about or wander here and there" , "circuitous route" , "roundabout route" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
