Crossword Genius

Ball perhaps rolled around pitch (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

globe

'ball' is the definition.
(I know that ball can be written as globe)

'perhaps rolled around pitch' is the wordplay.
'perhaps' becomes 'eg' (for example).
'rolled' says the letters should be written backwards (letters roll back).
'around' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'pitch' becomes 'lob' (both can mean to throw).
'eg' back-to-front is 'ge'.
'ge' enclosing 'lob' is 'GLOBE'.

(Other definitions for globe that I've seen before include "Orb, ball" , "Earth - sphere" , "London replica theatre" , "The round world" , "Shakespeare's theatre" .)

I've seen this clue in The Daily Express.
