Crossword Genius

Bar with case of alcohol in stock (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

banal

'stock' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'bar with case of alcohol' is the wordplay.
'bar' becomes 'ban' (bar can mean to ban or prohibit).
'with' says to put letters next to each other.
'case of' says to hollow out the word (remove centre letters) (outsides of).
'alcohol' with its middle taken out is 'al'.
'ban'+'al'='BANAL'

'in' is the link.

(Other definitions for banal that I've seen before include "Trite or fatuous" , "Uninspiring" , "Boring or trivial" , "Uninteresting, commonplace" , "Stock" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
