Crossword Genius

Become the object of the exercise it appears (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

befit

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'become' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'object of the exercise it appears' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'object' could be 'be' (Be is an example) and 'be' is found within the answer.
'it' could be 't' (abbreviation. e.g. in 'tis) and 't' is present in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'the' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for befit that I've seen before include "Become, suit" , "Be right and suitable for" , "Be appropriate for" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
