Crossword Genius

Bid with lots of fervour (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

offer

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This might be a double definition.

'bid' is the first definition.
(I know that bid can be written as offer)

'lots of fervour' is the second definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't see how one could define the other.

'with' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for offer that I've seen before include "Submit" , "Expression of willingness to pay or give" , "Put forward" , "Hold out, tender" , "Make available for sale" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
