Crossword Genius

Bird in fine breed for associate (10)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

fraternise

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'associate' is the definition.
('associate'->'fraternize' is in my internal thesaurus and 'ize'->'ise')

'bird in fine breed' is the wordplay.
'bird' becomes 'tern' (tern is a kind of bird).
'in' indicates putting letters inside.
'fine breed' becomes 'fraise' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'tern' going within 'fraise' is 'FRATERNISE'.

'for' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for fraternise that I've seen before include "sociable" , "Associate with" , "Be friendly with" , "Consort" , "Meet socially" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
