Crossword Genius

Brings back rice (about a pound) and a cake (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

eclair

'cake' is the definition.
(I know that eclair is a type of cake)

'brings back rice about a pound and a' is the wordplay.
'brings back' says the letters should be written in reverse (I've seen 'bring back' mean this).
'about' is an insertion indicator.
'a pound' becomes 'L' (the pound sign is based on an L).
'and' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'l' after 'a' is 'al'.
'rice' going around 'al' is 'rialce'.
'rialce' backwards is 'ECLAIR'.

(Other definitions for eclair that I've seen before include "Finger-shaped cream-filled cake of choux pastry" , "Food" , "Comedienne" , "Finger-shaped cake with cream filling" , "I clear off with thin chocolate cake" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
