Cancel yearbook, having lost one article (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

annul

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'cancel' is the definition.
(I know that annul is a more specific form of the action cancel)

'yearbook having lost one article' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'lost' could be 'l' (abbreviation in sporting league tables) and 'l' is located in the answer.
'one' could be 'an' (an apple is one apple) and 'an' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'nu' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for annul that I've seen before include "Cancel or render void" , "Quash" , "Declare void" , "Make invalid" , "scratch" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
