Crossword Genius

Capone with bear turning up for fair game? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

hoopla

'fair game?' is the definition.
(game played at a fair)

'capone with bear turning up' is the wordplay.
'capone' becomes 'Al' (gangster Al Capone).
'with' says to put letters next to each other.
'bear' becomes 'pooh' (Winnie the Pooh).
'turning up' shows that the letters should be reversed in order.
'al'+'pooh'='alpooh'
'alpooh' reversed gives 'HOOPLA'.

'for' is the link.

(Other definitions for hoopla that I've seen before include "fair prize at this" , "fuss" , "Throwing event at a fair" , "Ring-throwing game" , "Fairground game; great excitement" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
