Crossword Genius

Caught up with a clear round, all right (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

overtook

'caught up with' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'a clear round all right' is the wordplay.
'a clear' becomes 'overt' (both can mean apparent or obvious).
'round' becomes 'o' (round can mean a round object).
'all right' becomes 'ok' (synonyms).
'overt'+'o'+'ok'='OVERTOOK'

(Other definitions for overtook that I've seen before include "Caught unprepared" , "Caught up with and passed" , "having gone to right" , "Caught up with and went past" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
