Cause sickness with raw starter dish (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

saucer

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'dish' is the definition.
(saucer is a kind of dish)

'cause sickness with raw starter' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
an anagram of 'cause' is 'sauce' which is present in the answer.
A single letter 'r' remains which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for saucer that I've seen before include "Piece of crockery; may fly?" , "Cup rest" , "Cup-holder?" , "Piece of crockery, mysterious when flying" , "Cup holder" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
