Ross

I believe the answer is:

accused

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'charged' is the definition.
('accuse' can be a synonym of 'charge')

'doomed to lose power ultimately' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'power' could be 'ac' (AC is an example) and 'ac' is present in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'but' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for accused that I've seen before include "Charged with a crime" , "He who stands in the dock" , "Blamed" , "Defendant appearing on a criminal charge" , "Indicted" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
