Choice of candidates barring first in vote (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

election

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'vote' is the definition.
(I know that election is a type of vote)

'choice of candidates barring first' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'choice' could be 'elect' (I've seen this in another clue) and 'elect' is located in the answer.
'of' could be 'o' and 'o' is present in the answer.
'first' could be 'i' (Roman numeral for one or first) and 'i' is found in the answer.
A single letter 'n' remains which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'in' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for election that I've seen before include "A vote to select the winner" , "Selection by ballot" , "Voting opportunity" , "Public vote" , "Vote to choose representatives" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
