Crossword Genius

Circus performance piece reviewed: "Sound of simplicity" (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

trapeze

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'circus' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both man-made objects as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe there's a link between them I don't understand?

'performance piece reviewed sound of simplicity' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'piece' could be 'trap' (trap is a kind of piece) and 'trap' is present in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for trapeze that I've seen before include "Horizontal bar as swing for acrobats" , "Bar for swinger" , "What the daring young man in the circus flies on" , "Aerobatic device" , "Seat on end of ropes" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
