Clear site to accommodate a building for display (7,6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

crystal palace

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'building for display' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'clear site to accommodate a' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'clear' could be 'crystal' (as in 'crystal clear') and 'crystal' is present in the answer.
'a' is within the answer.
'site' could be 'place' (synonyms) and 'place' is found within the remaining letters.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for crystal palace that I've seen before include "South London football team - building housing the 1851 Great Exhibition" , "Paxton's creation for the Great Exhibition, 1851" , "Joseph Paxton's 1851 creation" , "Area of S. London" , "Former London landmark" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
