Crossword Genius

Clever clogs right to get drink during strike (5,5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

smart aleck

'clever clogs' is the definition.
(both can mean a clever person)

'right to get drink during strike' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'right' could be 'rt' (abbreviation as in Rt Hon- the Right Honourable) and 'rt' is found within the answer.
'drink' could be 'ale' (ale is a kind of drink) and 'ale' is found in the answer.
'strike' could be 'smack' (both can mean to hit) and 'smack' is found within the leftover letters.
This accounts for all the letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

(Other definitions for smart aleck that I've seen before include "Know-all" , "Upstart" , "Wise guy" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
