Crossword Genius

Comfort male dog from the east (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

balm

'comfort' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'male dog from the east' is the wordplay.
'male' becomes 'm' (common abbreviation).
'dog' becomes 'lab' (short for labrador).
'from the east' says the letters should be written in reverse.
'm'+'lab'='mlab'
'mlab' backwards is 'BALM'.

(Other definitions for balm that I've seen before include "It comforts, soothes" , "There's comfort" , "Something soothing" , "Soothing ointment for lamb (4)" , "A soothing influence on lamb" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
