Confrontation both sides of divorce intended (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

defiance

'confrontation' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'both sides of divorce intended' is the wordplay.
'both sides of' means to remove the middle letters (only the letters on the sides remain).
'intended' becomes 'fiance' (who someone intends to marry).
'divorce' with its middle taken out is 'de'.
'de'+'fiance'='DEFIANCE'

(Other definitions for defiance that I've seen before include "Open resistance" , "Insubordination" , "show of rebellion" , "Hostile challenge" , "Disregard for authority" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
