Crossword Genius

Copy last good French vehicle (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

carbon

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'copy' is the definition.
(as in a carbon copy)

'last good french vehicle' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'good' could be 'bon' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'bon' is located in the answer.
'vehicle' could be 'car' (car is a kind of vehicle) and 'car' is found within the answer.
No letters remain.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for carbon that I've seen before include "Element of glass" , "Non-metallic element, C" , "Element of which diamonds are formed" , "Element in soot, charcoal, etc" , "C (with a footprint)" .)

I've seen this clue in The Mirror.
