Crossword Genius

Coward cut up over Scottish golfing resort (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

poltroon

'coward' is the definition.
(I know that poltroon is a type of coward)

'cut up over scottish golfing resort' is the wordplay.
'cut' becomes 'lop' (lopping is a kind of cutting).
'up' says the letters should be written in reverse (in down clue: letters go upwards).
'over' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'scottish golfing resort' becomes 'Troon'.
'lop' written backwards gives 'pol'.
'pol'+'troon'='POLTROON'

(Other definitions for poltroon that I've seen before include "Utter coward" , "Traditional chicken" , "one was entirely yellow" , "Abject coward" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
